advice

Below is some general advice on how to achieve the best results from super 8. Provided are links to help choose your stock, find processing labs and also some other online sites to help get the answers you need to get started.

SHOOTING

To improve results with your transfer, shoot a few frames of a grey card, a white card and if possible, a macbeth colour chart at the head of each roll/scene change.

When shooting colour reversal film it is critical that you have a filter in place when shooting outdoors. Reversal film does not have very much latitude and once a scene is shot with incorrect filtration much of the colour information is lost forever. We can correct this problem, but only up to a certain point. If the scene is too blue or too orange, there may not be enough colour information to neutralize the colour balance.

A 50' reel of Super 8 has approx 3600 frames.
@ 24 fps runtime is: 2:30
@ 18 fps runtime is: 3:20
Shooting at 24fps will give you smoother playback, and will be easier to convert if blowing up to 16mm or 35mm. 24fps is the standard shooting speed for filmmaking today.
